The city of Dover is by far the oldest capital in the country. It was founded 1683 by that famous man William Penn. In 1717, it became official with the area being 125 acres. Needing protection from fire, the town established the first water system. Dover is above an underground water supply so it was easier to establish and quite frankly, a blessing.

When electricity came to light (pardon the pun) in 1900, the water plant joined forces with the light plant and, voila, the first steam generating system. But the greatest build up for the city of Dover was following World WarI and World War II. The city got bigger, the industrial revolution was booming and babies were being born.

Being the first state, Delaware's discovery happened in the year 1609 by a man with the name Henry Hudson. Capt. Samuel Argall of Virginia named this first state for the first governor, Thomas West, Baron De La Warr get it De la ware. England took over Delaware in 1664 and transferred it to the Three Counties in 1682. The citizens of Delaware fought to separate during the American Revolution, this is when it became the first state of the union. During the Civil war, Delaware did not stray from the union even though it was known to be a slave state.

This fine state of Delaware grows a variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as corn, potatoes, and soybeans. The industrial age made Delaware a big chemical industry, along with textiles, paper, metal products and automobiles.

There are many sites to see and things to do in the first state of Delaware. There is the Fort Christina Monument, the historical Holy Trinity Church, which was established in 1698 and is the oldest Protestant church in the country still in use.

The state flag of Delaware has a fascinating history. It was formed in 1913 with a blue field that has a diamond with the seal of the state. On the seal, is a soldier with a rifle in his hands, a farmer with a hoe, that are facing each other with scroll work enclosed with an ox, a wheat sheaf, and a ear of corn. Under all of this is a white ribbon with the words "LIBERTY AND INDEPENDENCE." Below all of this is the date December 7, 1787, the date Delaware to be ratified into the United States Constitution.
